We want to share our story. We’re Kent and Kerry Jossie, the founders of Skylight Respite Ranch. We have twelve children, six biological and six adopted out of foster care. Our adopted children ranged in age from 4-14 when they joined the family, and they came with an “alphabet soup” of diagnoses—RAD, ADHD, PTSD, and more. We love our children dearly and have had some wonderful times with them. There were days, however, when their trauma and fear caused challenging behaviors. We were exhausted and frustrated, and didn’t know where to turn for help with our kids’ special needs. We desperately needed respite just to breathe and to know what we should do in the future.

We traveled the country, learning from the best therapists about trauma and healing. We wanted to help other adoptive families who were also struggling. We began teaching parenting classes and we purchased 80 acres in rural Kansas to build a respite care home where children can spend 1-14 days enjoying nature’s peaceful ambience. Our goal is to provide respite care and parent education to help families stay together and thrive.

When we moved here four years ago, we were certain Skylight Respite Ranch would be up and running by now. We have made great progress, and we have adapted our plans as needed. I, Kerry, am now going to school to get my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. When I graduate in the summer of 2018 we will open a small version of Skylight Respite Ranch in our home.

Meanwhile, I will be sending out weekly (approximately—it might depend on how much homework I have that week!) emails with parenting tips and ranch updates. Please click the link below to subscribe to our newsletter. I look forward to communicating with you!
